Although I designed Soakie specifically for pencil line tests it was really fun to spend some time putting her 3 ages into colour.

A friend reminded me of this artist makes glass sculptures that feel like wonderful sea creatures… a tropical ocean palette.

I’ve been researching the almost extinct art of diving for pearls in Japan, and also in Korea. The women who do this are known as Ama. Today there are so few remaining and most of them are aged between 45 and 80, with no young women wanting to train to be Ama.

Developing the kid’s face was quite fun. I’m happy with the way she looks now, needless to say she went through many awkward phases before the ones we have here. The older Soakie was by far the hardest one to get right but I think she’s just about there…

As the character of has Soakie developed I’ve stopped thinking of her as a mermaid, but as a marine biologist. Therefore I resolved that a wetsuit would be the most fitting attire for her three ages.

a mermaid version, just for good measure…
